Google still has big AI plans for its search engine…⁹³⁰

I’ve got absolutely no idea what “snackable” means, but that’s the word Sundar Pichai is using to describe the plans that Google has for shaping the idea of ‘search’. It seems like they want to shift the idea of search from a list of links to something more visual and interactive. Users might be prompted to ask follow-up questions, and even interact with things like TikTok videos in the search experience. It looks like there’s a concern here that young people are seeking information from alternative platforms, and Google is making an effort to capture that somewhat.

Working from home is a big debate—some people love it, and others aren’t so keen. And when one of the biggest geezers in the AI space has a thing or two to say about it, we should probs all listen. OpenAI founder Sam Altman doesn’t seem to be a fan. He’s described the idea of permanently-hybrid working as one of the tech industry’s biggest mistakes, and thinks that it’s totally inappropriate if you want to drive a start-up forward with innovative approaches. Fair enough—but I do love a Monday and Friday at home…

MosaicML is joining the open-source gravy train⁶⁶⁵

Mosaic is the latest team to make its mark on the open-sourced AI stage, and this one seems pretty exciting. They’ve just opened up the MosaicML Foundation Series, making transformer models trained on over 1 trillion words commercially available to whoever fancies it. Apparently, the quality of the models matches Meta’s Llama ones, and they’re being pretty open about the process: almost two weeks of training at ~$200k - sheesh!
